Know your rights in school as an LGBTQI+ educator, staff member, or student.
In 2026, the attacks on LGBTQI+ youth, educators, and the U.S. education system have been piling up. From new school district rules to new Supreme Court opinions, there has been a lot of information circulating. We want to make sure students and the support systems that care for them are equipped with information to Know Your Rights. Harassment and discrimination against LGBTQI+ people are prohibited by both federal law and the U.S. Constitution. Despite this, many LGBTQI+ students and educators still experience harassment and discrimination every day.
Schools must abide by federal protections like Title IX, and many states have additional laws that reinforce non-discrimination rights for LGBTQI+ students and staff. These legal safeguards are a vital tool in keeping schools safe and respectful.
